Common questions about choosing upper secondary
How do I choose an upper-secondary school?
Start by choosing a programme (vocational or higher-education-preparatory), then compare schools' graduation rates, share of university-eligible pupils and teacher certification. Skolkoll collects Skolverket's statistics per school so you can filter by municipality, programme and results.
What are admission scores?
Admission scores are the merit value the lowest-admitted applicant had when all places were filled. They vary between programmes and schools depending on demand. Skolkoll publishes historical admission scores per upper-secondary school and programme — use the admissions simulator to see how your merit value compares with previous years.
When do you apply to upper secondary?
Applications open in January and usually close in mid-February. Final admission takes place in July after the final grades are published. Timelines and routines differ by municipality — always check with your municipality's upper-secondary admissions.
How is the merit value calculated?
The merit value is the sum of your 16 best final grades from year 9 (max 320 points), plus extra points for modern languages (up to 20 points), so the maximum is 340. See the glossary entry on merit value for a detailed guide.
Are independent schools better than municipal upper-secondary schools?
It varies — there are strong and weak schools in both categories. Skolkoll lets you compare graduation rate, university eligibility and teacher certification side by side for independent and municipal upper-secondary schools in the same municipality, so you can assess the individual school rather than the ownership type.
