What does the School Survey measure?
The School Survey (Skolenkaten) is an annual questionnaire by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate (Skolinspektionen) sent to students, parents, and staff. It measures perceived safety, study peace, stimulation, support, and anti-bullying efforts on a scale from 0 to 100.
How often is the survey conducted?
The survey is conducted every year. Results are typically published in autumn and cover the school year that just ended. Target groups are students in grade 5, grade 8 (primary school) and year 2 (upper secondary).
Why does this page focus on safety?
Safety is the most comparable dimension across school types and grades. It is also the factor that research most strongly links to both academic outcomes and student wellbeing.
Methodology and sources
The School Survey (Skolenkäten) is conducted annually by the Swedish Schools Inspectorate (Skolinspektionen) and targets students in grade 5, grade 8 (primary school) and year 2 (upper secondary). Each dimension is calculated as an index from 0 to 100 based on student responses.
Municipal aggregation: We calculate the arithmetic mean of all schools' safety indices within each municipality. Municipalities with fewer than 3 schools with data are excluded from the ranking.
Caveats: Survey responses are self-reported and affected by response rates, student demographics, and time of year. Small schools may have high variance. Always consider municipality size and demographic context when comparing.
