Sweden has 8,798 active preschool units across 290 municipalities — more units than any other school form, because preschools are smaller and placed closer to where families live.
6,240 of them are run by a municipality and 2,558 by an independent operator. Admission rules differ: municipal preschools normally queue by waiting time, while independent ones set their own criteria.
Preschool is not compulsory schooling, which is why it is counted separately from the compulsory-school figure rather than folded into it.
The register is a moving target: Skolverket adds new school units and deregisters closed ones continuously, so the figure changes between school years and even within one. Skolkoll syncs the register weekly and every count on this page is recomputed from that sync.
