How many compulsory schools are there in Sweden?

Skolverket's school-unit register (2026-10-06) lists 4,624 active compulsory schools in Sweden. 3,803 are municipally run and 820 independent.

Sweden has 4,624 active compulsory school units across 290 municipalities. Preschools, upper-secondary schools and adult education are not included — they are separate school forms with their own registers and their own counts.

3,803 are run by a municipality or a municipal federation and 820 by an independent operator — an independent share of 17.7% of those 4,623 classified units. Both are funded by the same pupil voucher and follow the same national curriculum. One further unit has another or unknown operator type and is reported separately.

The count is of school units, so a large school split into several registered units counts more than once, and a small municipality served by one unit counts once. That is the same basis Skolverket uses when it publishes national school statistics.

The register is a moving target: Skolverket adds new school units and deregisters closed ones continuously, so the figure changes between school years and even within one. Skolkoll syncs the register weekly and every count on this page is recomputed from that sync.
