New in the municipality?
Have you just moved or are you planning to move? Here we help you find schools in your new area and understand how to get a place quickly.
Find schools in your new municipality
Step by step
- Contact the municipality
Call or email your new municipality's education office. They can tell you which schools have places and help you.
- Explore the schools
Use Skolkoll's search tool to see all schools in the area with merit values, teacher qualifications and distance.
- Contact schools directly
Call or email the schools you are interested in to check availability and book a visit.
- Apply for a place
Municipal schools: via the municipality's online service. Independent schools: directly with the school.
- Request a handover
Ask your old school to transfer grades, the individual development plan (IUP) and any support programme to the new school.
Important to know
Your home municipality is a central contact for schooling and placement, but the exact school and start date depend on rules, school form and capacity.
You can apply to several options. Selection, queues, admission and the school voucher can differ between municipal and independent providers.
The process can be quick or require more handling. Ask for the next contact in writing, especially when changing school mid-term.
Tips when moving
If possible, start looking for schools before you move. Book school visits during holidays.
How will the child get to school? Is school transport available? Can they walk or cycle?
Choosing a school where other children from your neighbourhood attend makes it easier to form friendships.
Ask neighbours and other parents about their experiences with local schools.
Make sure grades and the IUP are transferred. If the child has special support, inform the new school early.
Preschool when moving
For preschool, the following applies:
- Contact the new municipality's preschool office
- The municipality has its own queue and placement routines and time limits for preschool
- For particularly urgent needs: describe the situation and ask which handling applies
- Contact independent preschools directly
Upper secondary when moving
If you move during upper secondary:
- Contact the admissions office in the new municipality
- A change may be possible, but a place on the same programme or course structure is not guaranteed
- Alternative: commute to your old upper-secondary school if feasible
- Talk to the study counsellor about how the change affects your courses
Common questions
How quickly can my child start at a new school?
It varies between municipalities, school forms and availability. Contact the municipality or the provider and ask about the start date and the documents needed.
What if we move mid-term?
Contact the new municipality as early as possible. Ask how placement is handled, when the child can start, and how grades, the IUP or any support programme are transferred.
Can the child stay at the old school after moving?
It may be possible, but transport, the school voucher and agreements need to be checked with both your home municipality and the receiving provider.
How do we choose the right school in a new area?
Use Skolkoll's search tool to compare schools. Look at merit values, teacher qualifications and distance. Booking a school visit is highly recommended.
Who can help us find a school?
Contact your new municipality's education office or equivalent school-choice function. They can describe the process, current options and the information they need.
What documentation do we need from the old school?
Ask for grades, the individual development plan (IUP) and any support programme (åtgärdsprogram). The school must help with the handover.
